including john mccain and lindsey graham are now calling for a, quote, watergate-style investigation into the libya raid and the obama administration's response to it. they also said they would try to block any attempt to nominate susan rice as the next secretary of state, describing her as unqualified for the job after she originally characterized the terror attack as a protest gone wrong. she went on the sunday shows including "meet the press" a couple days after the attack and said that. president obama in his news conference yesterday fired back at senators mccain and graham. >> let me say specifically about susan rice, she has done exemplary work. she has represented the united states and our interests in the united nations with skill and professionalism and toughness and grace. if senator mccain and senator graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me. and i'm happy to have that discussion with them. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador who had nothing to do with benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had rec

plan. is there news to be made on this? >> yeah, i think so. senator graham and i have talked, and we have resuming the talks that were broken off two years ago. we had put together a comprehensive, detailed blueprint on immigration reform. it had the real potential for bipartisan support based on the theory that most americans are for legal immigration but very much against illegal immigration. our plan just to be quick does four things. first of all, close the border, make sure that's shut. second, make sure that there is a non-forgeable document so that employers can tell who was legal and who was illegal and once they hire someone illegally, throw the book at them. third, on legal immigration -- that will stop illegal immigration in its tracks. third, on legal immigration, let in the people we need, whether they be engineers from our universities, foreign or people to pick the crops. and fourth, a path to citizenship that's fair, which says you have to learn english, you have to go to the back of the line, you've got to have a job, and you can't commit crimes. graham and i are tal
graham saying "we have nobody to blame but ourselves when it comes to losing hispanics. i intend to tear this wall down and pass an immigration reform bill that's a solution to an american problem." softening towards immigration reform is even happening among some fox news channel personalities. of course, not on fox news channel, but on the radio shows. but still, it's happening. so immigration reform may be more within the realm of possibility in the near term than it has been for a long time. last week on thursday, two days after the election, mark kelly, the husband of gabrielle giffords made a statement at the sentencing hearing of the man who shot her and 18 other people outside a tucson supermarket. it included a poignant call for a restoration to sanity on gun policy in this country for at least a return to what used to be the gun laws in america "we have a political class afraid to do something as simple as having meaningful debate about gun laws and how they are being enforced. we have passed up the opportunity to address this issue. after columbine, virginia tech, aurora, we h
graham who are calling for a select committee which would be perhaps a joint committee, house and senate, bipartisan, to have one group like a watergate panel or an iran-contra panel to look into benghazi? >> the first part of your question i would beg to differ. the democrats were there when i visited with eric nordstrom. we were there hand and glove together. they did get to participate in our witness lists. but the second part of your question, the senate is moving in the right direction. i think there is a concern if you stove pipe this and so many different committees trying to interview individuals you don't get the full picture. i support what senator mccain, lindsey graham, kelly ayotte are doing. i think that probably is the right direction. >> thank you so much. thanks for being with us. >> thank you. >> we're only minutes away from the president's news conference. stay with us for live coverage next on "andrea mitchell reports." >> time for the your business entrepreneurs of the week. kathleen and susan are encouraging customers to shop local. they created the monthly ladies n
cain, and senator graham and others want to go after somebody they should go after me. but for them to go after the u.n. ambassador, who had nothing to do with benghazi, and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received, and to hurt her reputation, is outrageous. >> reporter: overall, though, he was geneal and reflective. >> on the other hand, i didn't get re-elected just to bask in re-election. >> reporter: while the president had some tough words for his old presidential rival, john mccain, he actually was very conciliatory towards mitt romney and reiterated his hope they would sit down, saying there were a lot of ideas that mitt romney said on the campaign that he agrees with. >> chuck todd, thank you, and after that moment you saw that senator john mccain went right out on the senate floor and shot right back at the president. nbc's kelly o'donnell has more for us. >> reporter: good evening, brian, this is really the latest chapter in what is a contentious history between the president and john mccain. and so after the news conference, john mccain went to the
. >> republican senator lindsay graham on "face the nation" this morning, molly ball, take a listen and see what he said on the other side. >> we have a national security failure in the making. i don't see how in the world you can find out what happened in benghazi, before, during and after the attack, if general petraeus doesn't testify. from my point of view, it's absolutely essential that he give testimony before the congress. >> molly, how is this benghazi back and forth likely to work out in light of these petraeus developments? >> well, i think we have to remember how much we still don't know. we still, i mean the petraeus story just breaking on friday, and details still coming out about what was discovered and how. i mean we originally thought that this was more about classified information and now it seems like it's more about harassment. i think we have to be sort of humble in the face of all the facts that we still don't have. i think a.b. is right that at this point, they look like two separate stories. it doesn't look like they're entangled, except to the extent that petraeus is a pl
director mike forlmorrell. >> others including senator lindsey graham it's likely petraeus will be called on at some point. >> i hate what happened to general petraeus for his family and the families involved, but we have four americans dead in benghazi, a failure in the making. i don't see how in the world you can find out what happened in benghazi before, during and after the attack if general petraeus doesn't testify. so from my point of view, it's absolutely essential that he give testimony before the congress so we can figure out benghazi. >> nbc news has reached out to general petraeus and paula broadwell, and so far there's been no response. jill kelley and her husband, scott, released a statement to "the new york times" yesterday, asking for privacy for their family. >> andrea mitchell, what happened here? the fbi's investigating this. a woman sends some -- first of all, tell us the nature of these e-mails that would prompt an fbi investigation. >> well, here's the situation. the woman, whom we have confirmed was jill kelley who was a married woman in tampa who did some social and
cain and lindsey graham today come out vehemently against the idea of susan rice becoming secretary of state. there's a whole bunch of questions that this white house would prefer not to be dealing with today. they'd prefer to be talking about the fiscal cliff. i have a feeling they'll be disappointed. >> of course, so far, the story that started with david petraeus is so complex we actually chose to diagram it out last night. there are no new components today but washington will be all riled up with investigations and hearings for the foreseeable future. >> that's right. and there is now talk david petraeus will testify in the next couple of days, either tomorrow or friday, that should loosen, let out some steam. >> chuck todd has to sit down. the president is entering the room. >> good afternoon, everybody. please have a seat. i hear you have some questions for me. but let me just make a few remarks at the top and then i'll open it up. first of all i want to reiterate what i said on friday. right now, our economy is still recovering from a very deep and damaging crisis. so our top priority has to
